Bhutan – day 1

An early start for us today as we met at the airport for a 4.30am check in.

Tracey’s top tip – arrive early for Bhutan Air flights because check in is super slow. I agree.

In fact we queued a long time to check in and realised that was because everything was checked and weighed (including hand luggage) and visas were copied and double checked.

Our flight went via Kolkata and gave a great opportunity to get to know Suraj who was sat next to me. He is a film maker and gave me loads of insight into Bhutan culture, it’s current issues and difficulties. I’m sure he’s going to be winning international awards very soon as his latest projects sounded fascinating.

We were collected by our lovely guide Bijay and drove through the valley that the plane had come down. Our first stop was Tamchog Lakhang, an old temple area with a bridge that dated from the 14th century. The bridge was made from iron links.

Our hotel is Thimpu Tower and is right in the middle of town. The owner is a hugely impressive woman – more details on her to follow.

The afternoon saw us visiting the chorten stupa, an old fortress ‘dzong’ which is now a government administrative center and a farmers market.

Dinner at the hotel was divine with yummy beef pas, cabbage filled rolls, chilli cheese and buckwheat pancakes.

We are all pretty knackered and looking forward to a good nights sleep and good day tomorrow. Today has been fab.
