Bhutan – Nunnery, Gantey Monastery and hike to the Black Necked Crane area.

An early start out of Punakha towards Gantey and the Pojikha Valley. We called at the Sangchhen Dorji Lhakhan Nunnery outside of Punakha. What an exhilarating location, at the top of the mountain, on the end he between two valleys. If I was to be a nun, there would be a good place to be one!

The nun who shyly showed me her musical instruments

One of the nuns kindly showed me the musical instruments and specifically how to hold the bell and the accompanying accessory.

After that we had a long drive through spectacular scenery and over the Lawala Pass at 3,400m. The vastness of the tree covered mountains was awe – some and also really hard to show in pictures.. but I’ll try 😂😂

On arrival in Gantey, we looked around the monastery and village:

…and then started on our walk to the wetland where the cranes hang out. The cranes migrate from Tibet in October/November but had not yet arrived when we went there.

House being constructed from mud blocks. It will be painful Ed in the Bhutanese style as everyone is required to do that

After visiting the Black-necked crane centre we travelled the short distance to our hotel.

Rooms had lovely views and were spacious with heaters and log burners. The overnight temperature came down to 3deg so we were thankful for them.

Tomorrow we are hiking the Tigers Nest Monastery- wish us luck!!
